Welcome to the latest edition of Blue Sky e-News!
As we near the end of 2020, I would like to take the opportunity to acknowledge all of our clients, colleagues, followers and friends for your continued support during 2020.  It has been an unprecedented year, filled with challenges, change and uncertainty.  However, I am so very proud of the staff here at Blue Sky Services who rose up to the challenge and showed true grit and determination to get through some of the toughest times our business has ever faced.  The outcomes for us have been overwhelmingly positive, we acted swiftly during a time where a rapid, well organised response was critical. We made scores of premises safe and hygienic through our deep cleaning and sanitisation processes and have bonded even further as a team.

Blue Sky has matured and grown as an organisation during the last 12 months and I am so very grateful to each and every one of our team members and clients who worked with us during the ever-changing COVID-19 pandemic. Thank you for placing your confidence in us. We have worked tirelessly with our clients throughout the year to help their businesses adapt to the unprecedented challenges they have faced and I am pleased to say that our clients have been delighted with the results.

Some examples of the things that I am particularly proud of include:

  • Disinfecting over 2,000 ambulances per week at 14 hospital sites and the positive impact that had on our Victorian Paramedics.
  • Undertaking complex work and getting operating theatres disinfected on time so that patients on the afternoon list could still have their surgery.
  • Watching our cleaning staff at the ‘coal face’ rise to the challenge and to the increased scrutiny their cleanings standards were put under and seeing the positive results of their persistence.
  • Working with our clients to reassure them and their staff, that our cleaning services would help keep them safe and healthy.

Our team would like to wish you all the very best for the festive season and may the new year bring brighter days.  We hope you all have the opportunity to relax with loved ones and enjoy a very well-deserved break after what has been a year like no other!

Blue Sky’s Services – People First Approach

During the pandemic Blue Sky Services have played a crucial part in keeping our communities safe and healthy during this time. Since COVID-19 cleaning protocols have changed significantly. The level of cleaning now required to help ensure that the virus continues to be prevented and/or minimised from being transmitted means that a combination of cleaning and disinfection needs to be undertaken.

Our cleaning crews have been called upon to deep clean, disinfect and sanitise, office spaces, health care centres, hospitals and local community centres to name a few. 

Our focus was always on ‘people’s safety first’ ensuring that our employees were properly trained, well informed and equipped with the right Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) gear to handle this sudden increased demand for cleaning during this high-risk time. We take the safety of both our staff and our clients very seriously and have worked with the fast-changing pace of Government guidelines and regulations to ensure that Blue Sky comply with the safety measures in place to continue to decontaminate surfaces and keep our communities safe and clean.

Why strong infection prevention and control is imperative

Measuring performance and having standards in place helps to ensure that a consistent level of cleaning is undertaken. The Cleaning Standards for Victorian Health Facilities 2011 are a performance requirement of the Department of Health and are applicable to all Victorian health facilities, regardless of whether their cleaning service is provided in-house or by a contracted service such as Blue Sky.

 Measuring cleaning standards applies to all environments- not just high risk healthcare.

Cleaning staff must have a higher level of understanding and a working knowledge of infection prevention and control for their own safety and that of our clients.

For businesses to trust our cleaners to provide a detailed disinfection clean, especially when cleaners often work out of hours and are unseen by clients, evidence of training and competency is essential.  During 2020 Blue Sky Services completed a review of our staff training program and as a result:

  • We completely overhauled and updated our online eLearning program,
  • Upgraded our healthcare simulation room and
  • Expanded our mandatory education program for all staff – not only our cleaning staff, but for our operations and management team as well.

Measuring organic matter to determine cleanliness

There is technology currently available which can be used in conjunction with other monitoring methods to give clients reassurance that a surface which looks clean is actually clean of harmful viruses and bacteria. The equipment uses bioluminescence to measure adenosine triphosphate (ATP) indicating the amount of organic matter (living or once-living) on a surface.  This is especially useful for monitoring the cleanliness of high touch points in high-risk environments.

The Future of Cleaning – What you need to know

COVID-19 has taught us many lessons and as we prepare for the new ‘COVID normal’ we must remain vigilant and keep up to date with current best practice in regard to cleaning.

Engaging professionals:

In the past some businesses did not see cleaning as a priority. Cleaning was more about keeping an area or office looking neat and tidy rather than hygienically clean. As cleaning wasn’t a priority, business were able to keep the cost of cleaning low by employing non-professional cleaners and allocating minimal work hours, with very few compliance checks in place.

The COVID pandemic and its impact on businesses and lives has taught us that the purpose of cleaning an environment is to make sure our staff and customers have a tidy and pleasant environment to work and visit but it is just as important to make sure that environment is also safe and free of viruses and bacteria. Having a triple ISO certified commercial cleaning company, who provide highly trained cleaning staff and closely monitor cleaning standards is not just nice to have, but essential.


In every industry technology can increase efficiencies and save money. The commercial cleaning industry is no different. The use of technology such as robotic vacuums and floor scrubbers are certain to become more common as businesses look to having their environments cleaned more frequently and more professionally.

But some technology will never replace the need for a good mechanical clean of all surfaces and high touch points by a competent cleaner.

Electrostatic sprayers featured prominently during the COVID-19 pandemic. The sprayers give molecules of disinfectant a positive electrostatic charge which provides an even coverage of disinfection on surfaces and into recesses. However, there is still the question of the long-term health effects of spraying disinfectant into the environment – proceed with caution is the recommendation.


Remember in the ‘old days’ when we were told to ‘open the windows and let the fresh air in? Current best practice following a positive case of COVID in a building is to open all windows and allow air flow, but what happens if you can’t open a window? Experts are looking at the quality of air recirculated in a building to determine if changes need to be made.

Solutions such as HEPA filters and filtration systems have become topical but there is debate around if the expense may outweighing the benefits – especially if more office workers continue working from home.
